Kenya, Uganda in Plans to Pull Informal Sector Into Tax Bracket
The turnover tax was passed in the Finance Act 2006, and the rate charged is 3 per cent. Businesses taxed under this Act are expected to maintain cashbooks, sales receipts and invoices, daily sales summaries, purchase invoices and bank statements. The penalty for failing to file returns by the due date is $20.

Safaricom rejects Kenyan regulator’s request for free access to taxpayers’ M-Pesa accounts
Safaricom said it will not give the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) customer data unless laws touching on confidentiality are changed to allow the mining of such information. The KRA is seeking to gain unrestricted access to taxpayers’ bank and mobile money accounts as part of the efforts to catch tax cheats and improve revenue collection as its targets continue to rise.

Entrepreneur Lilian Makoi, co-founder of technology company Edgepoint, last year unveiled Jamii (previously named bimaAFYA) – a health insurance product users can buy for as little as $1 a month.
