Tonight – March 31 – and only tonight, the curtain will go up on the documentary, To Catch a Dollar, in movie theaters around the United States. The film, which premieres at 7:30 p.m. (local time), documents the travels of Muhammad Yunus as the Nobel Laurate and Grameen Bank founder spreads the word on microfinance – not in Bangladesh, India or elsewhere in Asia – but here … in the United States.
Presented by Grameen Research, the film follows the lives of several American women entrepreneurs as they struggle to move above the poverty line by procuring Grameen microloans to grow fledgling businesses.
The obvious question triggered early on in the trailer is: can microfinance really work in America? No doubt that skepticism will be addressed in a roundtable discussion following the screening. CNBC anchor Maria Bartiromo will host the panel, which include financial advisor Suze Orman, Kiva.org President Premal Shah and actor Robert DeNiro.
