The highlight of the 2015 IPIHD annual forum for many attendees was meeting the organization’s new cohort of innovators who are working around the world on problems such as health education for family members of inpatients, menstrual health, emergency training for health workers and new ways of delivering care through community kiosks.

I recently met an amazing set of entrepreneurs who are tackling a dizzying array of challenges: developing systems to allow impoverished families in poor countries to heat and pressurize water for bathing, cooking and cleaning; or creating a lawnmower-type machine that harvests and converts crops directly into biomass pellets for fuel. I wasn’t at SXSW or a high-level Silicon Valley gathering, but at VentureWell’s annual Open Conference in Washington, D.C.
